About the Programme

The Sustainable Manufacturing and Environmental Pollution (SMEP) programme has been established by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and implemented in partnership with UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD).  The programme aims to address the environmental and health impacts of the manufacturing sector in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, and some of the most pressing challenges associated with plastic pollution.  FCDO has committed £24.6 million to deliver research and related interventions to meet programme objectives. The SMEP programme was commissioned in mid-2019 and will run until October 2026. For more information, https://smepprogramme.org/

The Role of Exports in Manufacturing Pollution in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia

In the first phase of the project, Instituto 17 conducted a study on the environmental impact of manufactured goods exports in four selected countries: Bangladesh, Pakistan, Kenya, and Tanzania. The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) technique was used to estimate the impact caused by exports from economic sectors relevant to these countries. Public and private governance aspects were also analyzed to identify gaps and challenges in improving pollution control caused by the export of manufactured goods in these countries. In the second phase, the LCA database was expanded to include the other nine SMEP focus countries: D.R. Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Uganda, Zambia, and Nepal.
